Music Course Descriptions

Adams Middle School Music Program Syllabus

Classes offered

 -Jazz Band (Period 1) Advanced ensemble. Enrollment is open for all grades, by audition only.

-Concert Band (Period 2) Recommended for young musicians, students with prior experience in elementary music or for students who are new on the instrument. Incoming 6th graders will be placed in Concert Band unless recruited or auditions into Symphonic Band.

-Choir (Period 3) Open for all students, background in basic music theory preferred, but not required.

-Symphonic Band (Period 4) Primary Band class for returning students in the music program, mostly 7th and 8th graders. Advanced 6th graders can enroll in Symphonic via audition.

-Wind Ensemble (Period 5) Advanced ensemble. Recommended for returning 8th graders and advanced 7th graders. Not open for 6th graders. Advanced 7th graders must audition into Wind Ensemble.

*Required text is provided in music folders in the classroom. Students can check the folder out at the end of the day and check in the folder the following school day.

 

Class objective

-Learn pedagogies and fundamentals on individual instrument/ Voice. Learn to work together as a collaborative ensemble, to perform as a group implementing music elements such as style, dynamics, articulation, blend/ balance, texture/ color, and musicianship.

 

Materials

-For all students, bring working instrument to each rehearsal.

-For all students, bring pencil to each rehearsal.

-Students are recommended to own their textbook. Copies are available for sheet music.

-Reeds (For Clarinets and Saxophones, Rico size 2, 2.5, or 3 and Vandoren size 2 or 2.5).

-Recommended for Brass players to have their own mouthpieces. Woodwinds must have working reed for each rehearsal.

-Drum Sticks for Percussionist; Practice Pads recommended.

-Flip Folders (For Pep band only)

Participation

Students will receive 5 points for each class rehearsals. Points will be deducted from participation if student does not bring class materials such as instrument and music.

 

Concerts/ Performance

All school related performances are mandatory. Students will be excused only from returned permission form and written notification from parent prior to the event. Events are posted on online calendar. More information regarding performance will be sent home prior to each concert.

 

In-Class Assignment

Students will write out self-evaluation/feedback after their performance. All In-Class Assignments are due by end of the class.

 

Quiz/Tests

Performance tests graded via rubric. (Rubric will be provided in class prior to tests) Students will be evaluated based on their note/ rhythmic accuracy and musical expression. Students may take their test privately via appointment before the test deadline. No make ups allowed after the test date.
