Astro Camp

By: Amy Funabashi

Everyone has a different opinion about Astrocamp. I ranges from good, fun, just okay to boring. Either way it was a nice trip away from school and home, allowed you to hang out with your friends, learn new things, and have a good time. Astrocamp is a science camp for 8th graders, from all parts of California, to learn new things about science. This year everyone wanted to go, so instead of one trip there were two. Some of the activities involved science classes, zip line, black dark maze, micro gravity swimming, bottle rockets, and more. All of the activities were fun and enjoyable.

Every morning you woke up, got ready and went to breakfast. After every meal you got one hour of free recreational time. You could go to the gym, play basketball on outside courts, hang out in the meadow or in the cabins, but be sure there’s adult supervision. After free time you had two classes, lunch, free time, two more classes, dinner, free time, and then your evening activity. Every group had a different schedule of classes to follow.

Some classes involved a metal pole that allowed you to get shocked while on a chair or by touching a metal object. The electromagnetic activity went through the pole and into the metal you were touching and shocked you. There was also a class where you were able to blow things up. In every class you learned something different, but was slightly similar to your other classes so they flowed together. You learned about the three states of matter, magnets and their poles, gravity, solar systems, and much more.

The zip line, black dark maze, and the micro gravity activity were all fun and exciting. On zip line you put on special gear on which involved a belt that attached to the zip line wire and a helmet. If you are afraid of heights I would advice you to either skip this or go ahead and conquer your fears. It’s a nice ride on the zip line, like you’re cruising on your bike on a smooth surface down hill, except in the air. The Black Dark Maze was kind of scary and crazy. “It’s really claustrophobic,” said Lilly Fabian. It was really dark inside and you had to try and find your way through different obstacles. In the Micro Gravity Activity you got you wear a wet suit and some goggles. You went in the pool and built a structure out of plastic tubes and pieces. You had to be quiet, and only talk with signals.

Every night you get to do something fun to do with your group. There was space night, where you went on a nature walk. It was very dark and you had to be really quiet. You got to use telescopes and look at the stars and planets. It was very cold so you had to dress warm. The other thing you got to do was free swim. The pool was heated and it was really misty inside.  It was a lot of fun.

The cabins and food were good; everyone stayed in Cedar. You have bunks and bathrooms, which was nice. Lights out at 10:00, even though everyone liked to stay up and talk. Everyone said the food was not great, but not bad. Everyone sat at a large table and one person got the food for the whole group. Adams Middle School had their own section.

Everyone had a great time and was sad to say goodbye. ASTRO CAMP!

Dear Jane Doe

Dear Jane Doe,       I'm new to AMS, and have been picked on because of my weight. I've lost 30 pounds so far, but to the other kids, it's not enough. What should I do to make myself lose more weight?   too.heavy.for.them18:(      (6th grade boy)

Dear too.heavy.for.them187:(       You shouldn't have to worry too much about your weight at your age. It's good to think about eating healthy meals and exercising an hour a day.  But, it's okay to eat junk food every once in a while. If other students are picking on you constantly, tell an adult about it. Remember, only hang out with people who don't make you feel bad.  Jane Doe

Dear Jane Doe,      I have a big crush on this girl who's in 8th grade, and I'm in 7th. I am too afraid to talk to her. She might not like me back because I'm a year younger than her. Please help!    -Hoodie   (7th grade boy)

Dear Hoodie,      Just because you're a year younger, doesn't mean she wouldn't like you back. If you really like her, start off by being her friend, and getting to know more about her. Ask her a few questions; girls like it when you ask about them. Don't worry. Just keep your chin up and go for it!      Jane Doe

Dear Jane Doe,      My parents have been fighting for almost two years. Last night, my mom and dad announced that they would get a divorce. I've been really upset lately, and I think that I'm the reason why they started arguing in the first place. Do you have any advice?     -TacoFreak08     (8th grade girl)

Dear TacoFreak08,      Divorces never happens because of a kid. Usually, it's just between the parents. When they get a divorce, plan everything out so that you have a schedule you can follow. It might be hard to adjust, but you'll get used to it. Keep two of everything; toothbrushes, clothes, etc. Good luck!          -Jane

Trees Take Over The World

April Cartoon

Dear 8th Graders,

I know you all excited about the end of your 8th grade year and all of fun events that are planned.  We miss a day of school to go to Disneyland, there is the 8th grade dance and the most important is the 8th grade promotion. But, if your grades drop or you act inappropriately, you will not participate in these great end of the year activities and that would be a terrible way to end the school year.  So, if you're doing poorly in a class, ask your teacher for some extra help or if you're not doing your homework now’s a great time to start. Push to do your very best because that last impression is always important.

Writers' Conference

By: Sky Abdealziz

On March 28th, 2011 Adams Middle School was grateful to have Erin Gruwell come to the writers conferences as a keynote speaker. During this event, we had a variety of writers volunteer to teach us about their jobs and experiences as journalists, authors, and songwriters. Each advisement class had the chance to listen to 3 speakers stories that were all different in their own way but seem to have similar advice.

For future writers, always try your best and don’t be afraid to chase after your dreams or else you might not get what you want. Think outside the box and do what you like and you’ll succeed. Make sure you always try your best and never give up. All in all, these writers taught us how to be ourself  and do what we want.

Japan's Earthquake

By: Samantha Karnes & Jenniffer Morales

The 8.9 earthquake that struck Japan was devastating with damges totaling at least $309 billion. It killed over 10,000 people, and left more than 100,000 people homeless.  At this time there are at least 242,000 people living in shelters, and over 500,000 homes are without water.  Radiation is also a major concern and the level detected is at 7, which is the highest on the scale.

In addtion to the damage to the country, the economy is on a downhill slide.  One area that affects not only Japan but the world is vehicle production which is down 57% since March 2010.  Because of the uncertainty to the country, people have not been spending money, and tourism, which is one of their main sorces of income, has dropped.

So many people have lost everything, have no where to go and can do nothing but try to survive this major catastrophe. No words can truly describe how awful this is, and how much the people are suffering.  But as a country, they are working together and helping each other make it through this incredibly rough time.
