Audition Requirements

Adams Music Audition Requirements

 

Audition is required for placement of Symphonic, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Band. Students may be recruited by the director prior to audition.

Audition for large ensemble will also count as audition for sitting placement. (First chair principle, section leaders, second chair, instrumentation, etc.)

Audition will begin after Spring Concert, in class, and count as student's final exam.

 

Symphonic Band

Who: Audition is open for advanced new incoming 6th graders with elementary music background and some private instruction.

Scales: Scale packets. One octave, no slower than quarter note= 96.

Solo Piece: Have student prepare short solo excerpt, either a solo repertoire or an exercise from a Standard of Excellence Book. Solo Piece should aim to show off student’s tone quality, proficiency on their instrument, and ability to read correct pitch/ rhythmic notations.

Sight reading: Students will be given a random exercise from the textbook. Sigh reading is ability to read a given music accurately without preparation ahead of time.

 

Wind Ensemble

Who: Audition is open for advanced 7th graders. Not open for 6th graders.

Scales: 2 scales from scale packets and chromatic scale. One to two octave, no slower than quarter note= 110.

Solo Piece: Have student prepare short solo excerpt, either a solo repertoire or an exercise from a Standard of Excellence Green Book. Solo Piece should aim to show off student’s tone quality, proficiency on their instrument, and ability to read correct pitch/ rhythmic notations, and play music expressively. (California Music Content Standard 1, 2, and 4)

Sight reading: Students will be given a random exercise from the textbook or repertoire.

 

Jazz Band

Who: Audition open for advanced 6-8th graders.

Requirements: Bb blues scales and brief improvisation.

Solo Piece: Play brief solo piece that shows off student’s ability to play correct style. (Swing, rock, ballad, samba, salsa, etc)
