Honors and Math Placement

ELA & SS Honors for 7th & 8th Grade:

Thank you for your interest in participating in ELA/SS Honors program. RBUSD does not offer 6th grade ELA/SS Honors courses in order to support students' transition from 5th grade to 6th grade.

Current 6th and 7th-grade students and families may choose to opt into Honors ELA and Social Studies when students select their courses for the next school year in the Spring.

Please read the indicators of success for our Honors courses:

Indicators of Success for Honors:
 Grade of “B+”or higher in Language Arts and Social Studies
 Interest and academic ability in reading/analyzing works of literature and informational text
 Strong writing skills and desire to expand one’s vocabulary
 Approximately up to one hour/night dedicated to homework, research, projects and studying
 Capacity to work well independently and in groups
 Consistent work completion
 Advocates for one’s self and seeks assistance when needed

Compacted Math:

This course is part of RBUSD's accelerated math pathway and is intended for those with advanced math skills.  It is highly recommended that students selecting this course should have consistently earned 4s on their 5th grade report card in Math and maintain a B- or higher while enrolled in Compacted Math 6/7.

If your child does not meet these recommendations and you wish him/her to participate in compacted math, please contact our assistant principal, Brooke Mata. Students may not opt into Compacted Math after 6th grade because they would be missing a year's worth of curriculum.

If you have questions about the Honors/Compacted policies, please contact Brooke Mata, Assistant Principal, at [email protected].
